All materials must be packaged to meet Covanta 4Recovery, L.P. criteria based on anticipated handling requirements specific to each waste material. Since each Covanta 4Recovery, L.P. facility has different capabilities, handling requirements may also vary. The following general guidelines will apply in all but the most unique situations.
Pit Feed
Materials that are approved for Pit Feed Disposal will be unloaded and placed directly into the waste storage pit at the Covanta Energy-from-Waste facility with other non-hazardous waste prior to combustion. Materials for pit feed can be packaged as follows:
- Boxes, drums, and cubic yard boxes should be made of cardboard, fiber or poly (wooden crates and aluminum/steel totes can be reviewed on a case-by-case basis).
- Steel drums/containers (Niagara only)
- The containers should be palletized and shrink-wrapped or banded.
- Each movable unit should be limited to a size maneuverable by a standard fork-lift.
Direct Feed
Materials that are approved for direct feed are fed directly into the feed chute of the combustion unit either using a mechanical tipping device, a conveyor or they are manually fed. Materials are direct fed for 3 reasons:
- Covanta 4Recovery, L.P. may require direct feed to ensure our Environmental/Health & Safety requirements are met.
- Customers or Covanta may require direct feed for secure disposal or witness burns.
- Covanta may require that a waste be fed at a limited feed rate due to operational concerns.
Packaging Guidelines for Direct Feed
- Boxes and drums should be made from cardboard, fiber or poly (no steel drums, wooden crates or aluminum/steel totes).
- Each container should weigh 50 pounds or less, with maximum dimension of 2ft. x 2ft. x 3ft. (Some facilities may require smaller packaging.)
- The containers should be palletized and shrink-wrapped.
- Each movable unit should be limited to a size maneuverable by a standard fork-lift.
Please refer to your Covanta 4Recovery, L.P. Approval letter for specific requirements.
